I hesitated before knocking on his door. As I waited for him to answer, I wrapped my arms around myself knowing he wasn't going to take this well. When the door opened, I didn't look up from my shoes.

"Y/N?" I heard Zac laugh. "What are you..."

He stopped talking when I looked up at him, tears building. I instantly saw the look in his eyes change when he saw the bruise on my face and my busted lip.

He grabbed my hand and gently pulled me inside his apartment. He closed the door behind us and turned around. He reached up and examined my face.

"Who did this to you?" He asked. When I didn't answer him, he gently pushed it. "Who hit you, Y/N?"

"You know who," I whispered, barely audible. I watched as the anger built in him. His jaw clenched and his shoulders tensed. He ran his fingers through his hair as he looked around, trying to put his thoughts together.

"I'm sorry," I barely got out. When I apologized, his head quickly turned towards me.

"You have nothing to apologize for," he said through his teeth.

The anger disappeared from his face as he looked at me. As his eyes drifted down to my shaking hands–a sign that I was about to go into an anxiety attack–he quickly grabbed his jacket that was hanging by the door and wrapped it around my body. He grabbed my hands and pulled me into his chest.

"It's okay," he started to soothe. He tightened his arms around me as he rubbed my back. He knew that all I needed to stop this anxiety attack was to be held, and held tightly. I buried my face into his chest as he slowly started rocking us.

"I'm sorry I snapped," he whispered as he didn't let me go. "I didn't mean to get angry at you. It's just..." He sighed before continuing, "The idea of someone–anyone–laying a finger on you makes me so unbelievably angry."

Zac leaned down and pressed his lips to the top of my head. I let out a shaky breath as I tightened my arms around him. "Do you want to go sit down?" He asked, his voice barely above a whisper. I nodded, not pulling away from his hold.

With me still tucked into his chest, Zac led me into the other room and sat me down. He kept his arms around my shoulders as we sat in silence. He knew that I would open up whenever I was ready.

I lost track of how long I sat in his arms. I couldn't help but compare the feeling I got when I was with Zac versus when I was with Jason. Zac and I have known each other our whole lives. I started dating Jason just over a year ago.

The entire time that I've been dating Jason, Zac has never liked him. He continually mentions that I deserve better. The first time that Zac saw the bruise, he assumed that Jason had caused it. Sadly, he was right.

About three months into dating Jason, he showed his true colors. He showed up at my apartment, drunk off his ass. He started yelling at me about my career choice, what I do during the day, and every little flaw I had. The thing that made him the angriest was when he brought up my relationship with Zac.

That was always the tipping point.

The second I tried to reassure him that Zac and I were childhood best friends, he threw his empty beer bottle at me. I covered my face with my arm and a piece of the glass got stuck. After he left, I ended up going to the hospital. Luckily, the staff didn't ask any questions.

Zac, however, was furious.

"I know you like for me to wait for when you're ready to talk but..." Zac sighed as he finally pulled out of the hug and turned towards me. "I can't do this anymore, Y/N. I can't sit back and watch as he hurts you, physically and mentally hurts you."
